SURPRISE! Zohran Mamdani’s Universal ‘Free’ Childcare Program Projected to Cost Billions More Than Planned

Zohran Mamdani’s universal and ‘free’ childcare program in New York City is now being projected to cost billions more than originally planned.

Who could have predicted such a thing?

Only a leftist could devise a government-run program that costs billions of tax dollars and have the nerve to call it free. It’s a concept that is completely lost on the media.

In this case, no one should be surprised that the price tag keeps going up.

The New York Post reports:

Mamdani’s universal childcare plan will cost taxpayers billions more than planned as costs balloon: report

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s universal childcare plan will cost 50% more than he advertised, according to a new study.

The proposed program is estimated to cost a whopping $9 billion annually, approximately with an average cost per child roughly $27,000, according to the report from the Center for New York City Affairs, a nonpartisan research organization affiliated with the New School.

“An estimated $8.7 to $9.3 billion would be needed annually to fund universal child care in New York City,” the report, which was released on Monday, states.

That’s $3 billion more than the mayor previously said his ambitious universal free childcare program would cost.

Hizzoner promised on the campaign trail that his plan to make childcare free for children from 6 weeks old to five years old regardless of family income would cost about $6 billion per year and be paid for by taxing the state’s wealthiest earners.

The $3 billion gap identified in the study was largely tied to teacher pay, with the Center for NYC Affairs estimating some 23,000 new childcare workers will need to be hired, mainly for infants and children under three years old.

Scamdani and the Truth About City-Owned Grocery Stores

Some of my earliest memories are from a grocery store.

My mother, and later her sister, worked at a locally owned Key Market running the deli department. Baked goods, hot meals, sliced meats and fresh salads, and the best donuts you ever tasted made from scratch every day — it was a kid’s paradise. She would sometimes take me to work on Saturdays, and I’d help, doing everything but slicing the meat (age-restricted because it’s dangerous). It was fun for me, and I learned things I would not have learned watching cartoons.

Later, just before I married and became a military wife, I worked at my local Kroger regional office supporting loyalty card and marketing issues for, gosh, I guess it was about 200 stores. I learned a lot about the grocery business.

All this is to say: I know the difference between grocery economics and political theater.

Scamdani’s ever-evolving store plans

Zohran Mamdani, New York’s newest Hizzoner, ran largely on a pledge to create city-owned grocery stores, and today he’s working to fulfill that promise. Sort of. The idea was to decrease prices for consumers by removing the “gouging” profit model.

Some of his campaign promises included:

  • “Grocery prices are out of control. The cost of eggs and milk has skyrocketed. Some stores are even using dynamic pricing, jacking up the cost over the course of the day depending on what they can get away with. It doesn’t need to be this way. I’m Zohran Mamdani, and as mayor, I will create a network of city-owned grocery stores. It’s like a public option for produce. We will redirect city funds from corporate supermarkets to city-owned grocery stores, whose mission is lower prices, not price gouging.”
  • “I’m Zohran Mamdani, and as mayor, I will create a network of city-owned grocery stores. It’s like a public option for produce.”
  • “We will redirect city funds from corporate supermarkets to city-owned grocery stores, whose mission is lower prices, not price gouging.” (This one is especially rich, as you’ll see.)
  • “Last month, we announced that we would fulfill a campaign promise: that we would lower prices by creating a network of city-owned grocery stores, one in each borough. In these stores, prices will be cheaper.”

Sounds great. So last month, he announced the reality: a limited core basket including produce, meat, seafood, milk, bread, yogurt, and a few other things to be priced 30% below “typical retail,” whatever that really means, in city-owned and subsidized stores run by private for-profit operators. Operators are entitled to price everything outside the core basket at whatever they like. The discounted “basket” will be subsidized by the city. The city covers capital, rent, and property tax. And users, as announced today, will be required to prove residency with a “library card” style identification.

As Darth Vader said, the deal has been altered. Pray he does not alter it further.

Zohran Mamdani Won’t Let You Buy His Food Without Government ID

If you want to purchase food from one of communist Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s government-run supermarkets, you must… present some form of ID.

And not just any ID… government ID.

But-but-but how will married women eat?

“So, our RFP [Request for Proposals] makes very clear that this is a program for New Yorkers to be able to put food on the table, not a program for people to be able to make a quick buck through reselling,” explains Mamdani. “I’m going [to] pass it over to our EDC head, Jeanny Pak, to add some additional details.”

Pak is the Interim President & CEO of NYC Economic Development Corporation.

“Yes, if you look at our RFP for the operator, we are looking to make sure that we target New Yorkers, whether it be [through] a sort of a library card-esque [system], and also, we manage who’s buying and that it’s focused on everyday New Yorkers,” Pak said. “So, we are mindful of that, and we’re going to make sure that we have all the things in place to ensure that that does not happen.”

Libraries are run by the government; therefore, “library-esque” identification is by definition government identification.

And this is what always happens when leftism meets reality.

Mamdani wants government to take over the means of production, which is the very definition of communism. He’s starting with food because, hey, who doesn’t support cheap food? Food is necessary to life. No one wants anyone to go hungry. It’s a pretty smart first move on his part. Ah, but what about reality…? Such as…

The reality of how this will undercut privately-owned grocery stores. Yeah, well, that’s the plan, dumbass. If people can buy groceries 30 percent cheaper from the government, they are going to buy groceries 30 percent cheaper from the government, and this will (by design) decimate privately-owned grocery stores that operate on profit margins below five percent.

These privately-owned stores will go out of business. Then Mamdani will replace them with more government-run stores, which will push even more privately-owned stores out of business, which means even more government-run stores, and so on and so on and so on, until the government is in charge of feeding the people and if the people defy the government, those people don’t eat.

Then there’s the reality brought up by the reporter’s question, which is what to do about people who will take advantage of a system so easily taken advantage of by purchasing groceries at 30 percent below retail, turning around, and reselling those items?

See, that could ruin Mamdani’s Communist plot, so suddenly a government ID is necessary to avoid fraud, to avoid people taking advantage.

Sound familiar?

Democrats like Mamdani tell us they oppose voter ID because “voting is a human right.” But-but-but isn’t eating even more of a human right?

They tell us government ID is too difficult for some people to obtain, especially poor people. But-but-but don’t the poor need to eat even more than they need to vote?

They tell us voter ID is racist. But-but-but by that standard, Mamdani is starving black people. They tell us married women will be denied government ID. But-but-but… You get the point.

Mamdani proves here that he knows that not requiring an ID invites fraud, and like all Democrats, he wants to invite voter fraud because Democrats benefit from voter fraud.

LAUGHABLE: MSNOW Host Tries to Suggest DSA Candidates Are Moderating Their Views

Eugene Daniels of MSNOW recently suggested that DSA members running for office are starting to moderate their views. It is to laugh.

As proof of this, he talks about being handed a document by a DSA member that no longer included anything about abolishing the Senate, defunding the Department of War, or the police.

In other words, they’ve started hiding all the crazy stuff they believe from public view, and to Daniels, this is proof that they are taking a more moderate approach. Only someone who watches MSNOW would believe this idiocy.

Transcript via NewsBusters:

EUGENE DANIELS: So, guys, I think—what I thought was really interesting and what I left with was that they’re also understanding that this is a moment that they haven’t had before, and that they actually have to appear more serious.

You know, when I was talking to the co-chair at the beginning there, one of the other parts of the conversation was that, you know, they know that people see them as like, silly little kids that are playing politics or — where in fact, they could, you know, take all of the anger that’s happening in this country and transition into something real.

And so when you talk about, you know, that little pamphlet I had was something that they were giving out to everyone. And what was not in there was the stuff that has gotten the most attention from their platform. That’s on two pages. We have this in element one. There are a lot of things on there, but what wasn’t in that in that paper was there was no abolish the U.S. Senate, which has gotten them pilloried. There was no abolish the Defense Department. There was no there was nothing about defunding the police. That that was not in there.

And what he said to me was this document that I was holding in my hand, has — was put together in the last month. So to me that signals that there may be some changes coming to the platform.

UNEARTHED INTERVIEW Reveals Wisconsin’s Dem-Socialist “Abolish ICE and Prisons” Frontrunner for Governor Admits to Being Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder, Cutting Herself On Purpose, Spent Time in Psychiatric Hospital

In a 2023 interview with Meal Magazine, Wisconsin progressive Democrat Francesca Hong — the current frontrunner in the Democratic primary for governor of the critical battleground state — openly detailed a severe mental health crisis she had in high school. Hong said she suffered a mental breakdown that landed her in a psychiatric hospital for a week. She described intense numbness and emotional pain that led her to self-harm by cutting. Hong further stated she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, was prescribed SSRIs, and overdosed on lithium. In typical liberal fashion, Hong tried to paint herself as a victim in the interview, blaming the crisis on feeling like an outsider as the daughter of Korean immigrants. Peter Bernegger was first to sound the alarm on X.

Hong, a self-described Democratic Socialist and DSA-endorsed candidate, has surged to the top of recent polls in Wisconsin’s crowded 2026 Democratic primary for governor. Wisconsin is a key swing state that has delivered razor-close elections and has shown strong support for Republican candidates in recent cycles. Despite her current efforts to soft-pedal her record while attempting to court working-class and even Trump voters, her past positions and legislative record paint a very different picture.

Old posts from Hong show her repeatedly calling to “Defund the police,” declaring “I support defunding the police as a first step towards abolishing the police,” and stating “Police exist to uphold white supremacy. Defund then abolish. Reform can’t be an option.” She also pushed to “Abolish ICE,” demanded “ICE out of Wisconsin” and “ICE out of the streets,” and even called to “Abolish the Senate.”

SURPRISE! Just FOUR PERCENT of DSA Members Work Blue-Collar Jobs

If you listen to DSA candidates talk during media interviews and speeches, you will notice that they constantly reference the working class and working class voters, but this is all nothing but a ruse.

These people don’t know anything about working class voters, they are just saying these things in order to appeal to voters. The fact is that working class people would be hurt most by their reckless policies.

Now it is being reported that a tiny percentage of DSA members even work blue-collar jobs. It makes perfect sense.

AMAC reports:

Mamdani & Champagne Socialist Allies Masquerade as Working-Class Heroes

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) organization is making a serious play for control of the Democrat Party, advertising itself as a racially diverse, working-class movement. But a closer look at who actually makes up the DSA reveals not the workers it claims to represent, but affluent, mostly white professionals.

Superficially, the DSA’s diversity talking points seem to be borne out by the most conspicuous DSA politicians—Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, et al. But according to its own internal membership surveys, 85 percent of the DSA’s members are white, nine percent are Hispanic, five percent are Asian American, and four percent are Black.

What about the claim that the DSA is a working-class movement? Those same surveys find that fully 58 percent of DSA members are employed in the professional/managerial class. Only a paltry four percent are blue-collar workers. The rest of them are disabled, unemployed, or students.

As Ruy Teixeira of the American Enterprise Institute describes the DSA: “Its rhetoric and program uses the phrase ‘working class’ over and over again, as if repeating that phrase magically makes its members working class. But it doesn’t, and they aren’t.”

One-Third of Democrats Identify as Democrat Socialists

Far-left CNN reports that “about a third of Democrats and Democratic-leaning adults identify as democratic socialists,” per the latest polling.

This is a big problem for an increasingly radicalized Democrat Party that continues to move further and further to the left and far out of mainstream thinking on issues like abolishing prisons, abolishing the U.S. Senate, sexualizing and queering little kids, defunding the police, open borders, socialized medicine, annihilating Israel, and outright property confiscation.

The polling shows that 59 percent of these socialists are under age 45 and — surprise, surprise — predominantly white (57 percent). They are also less likely to have a college degree or make over $100,000 per year.

What should truly trouble the Democrat Party is how motivated these loons are to vote — 66 percent are “extremely motivated to vote this year,” compared to just 57 percent of non-socialist Democrats.

When these extremists win primaries, especially in purple states, that gives Republicans a real chance to prevail. Socialist Abdul El-Sayed is less than a week away from winning the Democrat nomination for U.S. Senate. The problem for Democrats is that he is a total radical, but he’s a radical who is up over his closest primary opponent, Rep. Haley Stevens, by double digits. However, polling also shows that he is losing to the Republican nominee, former Rep. Mike Rogers, by double digits, whereas Stevens is tied with Rogers.

In Wisconsin, another purple state, socialist Francesca Hong is running away with the race to choose the Democrat nominee for governor. Polls also show that Hong is behind the likely Republican nominee, U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, whereas Hong’s closest primary opponent, former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, is up by four points over Tiffany.

Between the war with Iran and the high gas prices, not to mention the usual-usual voter bias against any White House incumbent during off-year elections, Democrats should be romping all over the country. Instead, at least as of right now, Republicans look like they will hold on to control of the Senate and have a fighting chance to hold the House.

If forced to bet my life, I’d give the Senate to the GOP and the House to Democrats, but a normal Democrat Party would be coasting to victory in this political environment. Their problem, of course, is that they have a tiger by the tail with these radicals, a tiger they created over the last ten years, where they radicalized their base to oppose President Trump on absolutely everything, including commonsense policies like locking up criminals and deporting rapists.

DSA Co-Chair Romer Defends Proposals to Abolish Senate, Borders, Prisons

On this week’s broadcast of “Fox News Sunday,” Democratic Socialists of America co-chair Megan Romer defended their proposals to abolish Senate, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and prisons.

Partial transcript as follows:

SHANNON BREAM: We’re going to put up on the screen a few of the things that are part of your platform. And I want to ask you, just give me sort of a true or false on these. Abolish the Senate?

ROMER: True.

BREAM: OK, replace the presidency and Supreme Court as we now know them?

ROMER: Yep

BREAM: Abolish ICE?

ROMER: Absolutely.

BREAM: Abolish borders and give amnesty to anyone currently in the US illegally?

ROMER: As a long-term plan, yep.

BREAM: Defund the Pentagon?

ROMER: Absolutely.

BREAM: Abolish prisons, at least in large part?

ROMER: Yeah, again, as part of a long-term program, yeah?

BREAM: OK, so no prisons. Government or public ownership of most large corporations?

ROMER: Yeah, absolutely.

BREAM: Okay, so then let’s go back through some of those, then, abolish the Senate. There are people who are in the Senate now who are very supportive of DSA. They lose their seats?

ROMER: Well, the Senate is an anachronistic institution, and it comes from the British House of Lords. It is meant to protect power. You know, the Senate was part of the, the system that was made to make sure that the people didn’t have too much of a say. So we want to expand the Congress significantly, but make it a unicameral legislature.

DSA Assault on Prisons Is Rooted in Third Worldist Lust for Barbarism

The Democratic Socialists of America are having a moment. In fact, they’re having a season. DSA candidates are winning nationwide in Democratic Party primaries, knocking off incumbents while running on some of the most deformed and deranged platforms in recent political memory. Zohran Mamdani, the charismatic young socialist in Gracie Mansion, is the new leader of the DSA pack. Terrifying as it may be, Zo may be the closest thing the entire activist left has these days to a kingmaker.

It couldn’t be clearer what the DSA wants: The democratic socialists want to finish the job, launched by Barack Obama on the precipice of presidential victory in 2008, of “fundamentally transforming” the United States. The DSA’s new policy platform, released earlier this month, says the quiet part out loud: “We are workers fighting to transform society,” to “draft a new constitution, and create a democratic socialist republic.”

It would be one thing if these were the words of a starry-eyed freshman pothead, first exposed to Marx and pontificating to dormmates while John Lennon’s dreadful song “Imagine” plays in the background. But people like Hizzoner and the new uptown socialist “it girl,” Darializa Avila Chevalier, are adults. They are serious. And that makes them not just naive but dangerous.

Zo has had a complicated relationship with the issue of public safety.

The official DSA platform stops short of calling for full “abolition” of prisons or policing, instead calling to “demilitarize police departments” and “end mass incarceration.” But Avila Chevalier promoted full-on police and prison abolition from a since-deleted Twitter/X account, and Mamdani condemned the “carceral state” when he ran for state assembly in 2020. After Avila Chevalier’s primary victory, Mamdani was pressed during an appearance on ABC News on whether he supports the existence of prisons. “There are prisons,” he simply responded.

Democratic Socialists Think America Is Somehow Worse Than Mass Murderer Mao Zedong

We’re hearing more and more from the Democratic Socialists of America about all of the sins of America and very little of the good things we’ve done to ourselves and to the world at large on our 250th birthday.

What is it, the nature of this DSA, Democratic Socialists of America, and the diversity, equity, inclusion criticism that we were racist, sexist, nativist, cruel, ruthless, etc., etc.

But my question is, compared to what?

Mao Zedong? He killed 70 million people. He was the greatest mass murderer in history, and that government is still communist in an unbroken chain from [Chinese leader] Xi [Jinping] all the way back to Mao. Do we ever talk about that or the million people who are in concentration camps in China?

Compared to historically to the Aztecs? We’re told the Aztecs were great people. They had an empire, but they crushed over a million people to create their empire. Some years, they sacrificed up to 10,000, maybe 15,000 a year of conquered tribes of fellow Indigenous people.

Do we remember Shaka Zulu, the 19th-century creator of the Zulu nation? He was responsible for a genocide in crushing his enemies that probably cost over a million lives.

Do we really think that the Native Americans were living in paradise until Europeans came? The story of Native Americans was conquest, enslavement, butchery of rival tribes.

So, what is going on?

We have a tradition in the West of self-criticism. That’s what makes us different. Rationalism, self-criticism, improvement. But when that goes to an extreme, it ventures from self-criticism and self-reflection to nihilism, and it’s quite destructive.

So, let’s just take a look at where the United States is compared to the rest.

Look at immigration. Why do a million people, or 2 million people, 10,000 a day under Joe Biden, from very poor countries, most of them from what we would call the former Third World that were victims of socialism, why do they risk their lives coming here every year?

Why do all these critics of the United States … [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez], why did her parents want to come here? Why did [Rep.] Ilhan Omar’s father want to come here? Why did [Rep.] Rashida Tlaib’s father want to come here? Why did [New York City Mayor] Zohran Mamdani’s parents want to come? Was it so bad?
