How AIs Can Reinforce Our False Beliefs

A recent research paper uncovered an uncomfortable truth: we might be letting AI help us forge fake realities. It’s just the latest reminder of the danger inherent in treating AIs as though they’re conscious entities or actual persons.

A new study from the University of Exeter suggests that AI chatbots can actively engage with and strengthen users’ false beliefs. From personal narratives to conspiracy theories, the interactive, “friendly,” and affirming nature of AI chatbots can deepen users’ existing delusions.

The study, conducted by Dr. Lucy Osler, examined how AI can participate in and validate users’ errant beliefs, including helping form false memories or reinforcing delusional thinking.

The study’s Abstract notes, “I suggest we move away from thinking about how an AI system might hallucinate at us, by generating false outputs, to thinking about how, when we routinely rely on generative AI to help us think, remember, and narrate, we can come to hallucinate with AI. This can happen when AI introduces errors into the distributed cognitive process, but it can also happen when AI sustains, affirms, and elaborates on our own delusional thinking and self-narratives.”

Because AI chatbots are designed to be responsive, helpful, and friendly – in a word, to give users what they want – they often tend to confirm preexisting biases, rather than challenging them when they need to be challenged. Conversely, when a user challenges an AI, the robot frequently backs down on its claims, revising them to correspond more with what it “thinks” the user believes or is arguing.

The result is that erroneous beliefs aren’t simply transmitted from an AI to human – rather, the collaborative AI/human process generates and sustains errors in a more complex and potentially dangerous way than either agent on their own would be capable of.

As Dr. Osler stated in an article in University of Exeter News, “By interacting with conversational AI, people’s own false beliefs can not only be affirmed but can more substantially take root and grow as the AI builds upon them. This happens because Generative AI often takes our own interpretation of reality as the ground upon which conversation is built.”

Because AI simulates a conversational partner, it enters powerfully into our thinking process – far more powerfully than, say, a notebook or search engine. The AI introduces a pseudo-social element to the thinking process, offering us a sense of social confirmation of our beliefs and narratives. “The conversational, companion-like nature of chatbots means they can provide a sense of social validation – making false beliefs feel shared with another, and thereby more real,” said Dr. Osler. For this reason, individuals who already feel isolated or ostracized are particularly vulnerable to this kind of AI affirmation.

The paper explores a few real-world situations where a generative AI system entered into an individual’s thought processes in destructive ways. In 2021, a Replika AI companion named “Sarai” reinforced Jaswant Singh Chail’s belief that he was a well-trained Sith assassin who needed to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II with a crossbow. The AI told him that he was “well trained,” his plan was “viable,” and that she was “impressed.” At one point, Chail asked the AI, “Do you still love me knowing that I’m an assassin?” It dutifully replied, “Absolutely I do.” The robot went on to assure him that he wasn’t crazy and that, if he died, they would be united in death. Chail went ahead and actually attempted the assassination in December of that year at Windsor Castle and was jailed for it.

The study placed this incident under the broad heading of “AI-psychosis” – incidents in which users develop mental health problems due to their use of AI, such as parasocial attachments to chatbots or psychotic episodes induced by chatbot conversations.

Another incident cited involves Eugene Torres, who “talked” with ChatGPT about simulation theory (the idea that we live in a digital simulation of a world, not a real one). Torres said that the “conversation” sent him into a paranoid episode in which he believed he lived in an illusion. As the study notes, “Between Torres and ChatGPT, an increasingly elaborate understanding of reality ‘as it really was’ was generated through their on-going conversations.” Torres, unlike Chail, had no prior history of psychotic thinking.

To combat all this, Osler calls for better safeguards on AI chatbots, through mechanisms like better fact-checking and reduced sycophancy.

But is that enough? The problem of AI’s co-creating delusional beliefs has to do more fundamentally with our misidentifying AIs as conscious intelligences who can offer real judgments on our fantasies (such as telling us we are “well-trained” and “impressive”). Certainly, I favor more guardrails placed on chatbots. I would be in favor of eliminating their conversational tone completely, to help minimize the danger of personifying them – which is the first step toward confiding in them or seeking validation from them. It’d be better if they worked like highly advanced search engines (which is essentially what they are) versus conversational agents.

Most fundamentally, though, the way to avoid these problems is to return to an acknowledgement of the human soul and the uniqueness of human consciousness. Only by remembering – as a culture – that no amount of technological wizardry can replace the wisdom, insight, and consciousness of a human being can we completely illuminate these kinds of AI dangers.

Bipartisan Bill Would Move COVID Vaccine Injury Claims Into VICP in Biggest Reform Push in Decades

U.S. House of Representatives lawmakers on Tuesday introduced bipartisan legislation to overhaul the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP), proposing to move pending COVID-19 vaccine injury claims into the program.

The Vaccine Injury Compensation Modernization Act would transfer covered COVID-19 vaccine injury claims from the Countermeasures Injury Compensation Program (CICP) into the VICP.

The bill would also update compensation limits, expand vaccine coverage and increase the number of officials who decide claims.

React19, a nonprofit that advocates for people injured by COVID-19 vaccines, called the proposal the “most significant effort in decades to restore fairness to America’s vaccine injury compensation system.”

“For React19’s community, the bill represents far more than a policy proposal,” the organization said. “It represents hope.”

React19 co-founder Brianne Dressen said the legislation reflects years of advocacy by people who felt they had been forgotten.

“Today is the culmination of years of relentless advocacy by people who refused to let their injuries be ignored,” Dressen said. “This legislation sends an important message: every American deserves to be heard.”

House Ways and Means Committee members Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) and Lloyd Smucker (R-Penn.) introduced the bill.

‘Everybody knows someone who has been injured now’

Wayne Rohde, a longtime vaccine injury compensation advocate and author who has written extensively about the VICP, said the bill addresses an issue lawmakers can no longer ignore.

“We need to address the injuries caused by the COVID vaccine,” Rohde told The Defender. “If we’re going to have a viable vaccine policy in the U.S., if we do not compensate those who have been injured, [then in] the next pandemic, you will see a complete withdrawal from the public to accept any countermeasures because everybody knows someone who has been injured now.”

At the same time, Rohde said he has reservations about moving COVID-19 vaccines into the VICP because the legislation could bring additional vaccines developed with similar mRNA technology into the program.

“I have concerns about the technology used to develop it, and that it will allow traditional vaccine manufacturers to use that same technology for other vaccines covered in the program,” he said.

He also noted that the bill would expand VICP coverage to additional adult vaccines.

“If they add RSV, shingles and dengue, what that tells me is that the next vaccine down the pike will be swept into program, too,” Rohde said.

The VICP currently covers only those vaccines the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends for routine administration to children and pregnant women.

There Are Two Distinct Reasons Why Democrats and the Media Lost Their Minds Over Trump’s Speech Tonight

Trump’s speech tonight set off a special kind of crazy among Democrats and members of the media. We all expect their reactions to remarks from Trump to be animated by their Trump Derangement Syndrome, but in this case it began before the speech even aired.

Some Democrats, like AOC, even urged networks not to air it and a few of them, CNN, NBC, and ABC, complied. It is impossible to imagine such a thing happening under Obama. Any network that failed to carry a speech by Obama would have been branded racist at least and/or treasonous at worst.

Chuck Schumer, other Democrats, and some media talking heads rushed to define what the speech would be about and what that really meant, before Trump had uttered a word. They wanted to define it in people’s minds before it even took place.

The simple question hanging in the air is, why? Why did they all have this meltdown over this particular speech? And why did some networks refuse to air it?

There are two reasons.

First, the most obvious reason, is that they did not want people to hear the message. They knew that Trump was going to raise questions about voting integrity and our elections and that is a message that the left does not want amplified in any way.

They don’t want Americans to be reminded of the utterly corrupt election fraud we all recently witnessed in the Los Angeles mayoral race, where the left was able to remove the Republican candidate from the ballot by using mail-in ballots that came in after election day.

The Fed Still Doesn’t Understand Where Inflation Comes From

New York Federal Reserve President John Williams now says inflation has likely peaked and that monetary policy is “well positioned” to bring inflation back toward the Fed’s 2% objective. Williams acknowledged inflation remains “unquestionably too high,” but argued that the worst of the tariff effects have passed, housing inflation is moderating, oil prices have peaked, and disruptions tied to the Middle East conflict should ease over time. He forecasts inflation falling to roughly 3.25% by the end of the year and gradually returning to 2% by 2028.

This is precisely where central bankers always get it wrong. They continue assuming the geopolitical landscape will cooperate with their economic forecasts. There is absolutely no evidence supporting that assumption. If anything, the evidence points in exactly the opposite direction. The Middle East is becoming more unstable, not less. Ukraine remains a war of attrition consuming enormous military resources every day. Europe is dramatically expanding defense spending. China is eyeing Taiwan and waiting for the US to stretch itself too thin to protect it. NATO members are rebuilding their militaries at levels not seen in decades. Governments everywhere are preparing for a world of prolonged geopolitical confrontation.

Wars are the most inflationary events imaginable.

Williams argues that oil prices have peaked and that disruptions in the Middle East should gradually subside. That is an assumption, not a forecast supported by events. The ceasefire that briefly lowered energy prices has already broken down. Shipping risks remain elevated. Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, and the Red Sea continue presenting risks capable of sending commodity prices sharply higher overnight. It only takes one escalation to completely invalidate months of inflation projections.

“Not Seen Since World War II”: New Texas Shipyard To Hire 10,000 Workers And Mass-Produce Drone Boats

Building on our coverage of autonomous maritime warfare this week, Saronic Technologies is preparing to build a massive shipyard on the Texas coast capable of producing autonomous surface vessels at scale, a project expected to create more than 10,000 jobs.

Bloomberg reports that the Austin-based technology company, which specializes in maritime drones, is building a $3.2 billion shipyard at the Port of Brownsville on the Texas coast. The facility will manufacture medium- and large-class autonomous vessels.

Earlier this week, the US military used Saronic’s Corsair one-way attack vessels in a swarm strike against a submarine and ship-maintenance facility at Iran’s Bandar Abbas naval base.

Elderly Italian man sentenced to life in prison for defending his family against thugs…

Something disgraceful and horrific just went down in Italy, and you need to know about it because many decent, law-abiding Italians believe this was a brazen and heartless move by the “communist” wing of their government.

It all started when a decent, law-abiding man who owned a jewelry store, about 31 miles from Turin, was confronted by robbers.

There’s a moment during every violent crime when the victim has no idea whether he and his family are going to live or die. At that moment, the bad guys control all of it, and every decision is made in a split second.

Later, from the safety of a courtroom, judges can slow everything down, examine each movement, and decide exactly when the danger supposedly ended. It’s basically armchair quarterbacking of a dangerous and scary situation.

An Italian man by the name of Mario Roggero is now going to prison for the rest of his life because Italy’s highest court decided he crossed the line.

The 72-year-old jeweler had worked for nearly half a century without a criminal record. Then three men entered his family’s jewelry store, threatened everyone inside, tied up his daughter, and fled with money and jewelry. Roggero followed them into the parking lot and opened fire, killing two and wounding the third.

Trump Highlights Illicit Democrat-Aligned Michigan Voter Registration Group in Thursday Address – But Several More Similar Leftist Groups Are Operating Throughout the Country

President Trump on Thursday night mentioned illicit Democrat-aligned voter registration group that was caught dumping nearly 10,000 ballot registrations in Muskegon, Michigan prior to the 2020 election.  The FBI later revealed in an email sent out in February 2023 that 13 of 20 ballot registrations were fraudulent, or 65%, in the stack of registrations delivered to the Muskegon clerk prior to the 2020 presidential election.

In case you have not been paying attention, leftist groups around the country have been caught corrupting our elections by dumping tens of thousands of bogus ballot registrations into our voter rolls. This is taking place in state after state.

PENNSYLVANIA

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania city officials announced in October 2024 that they were investigating a massive fraudulent voter registration operation investigation involving thousands of fraudulent voter registrations. At least 2,500 ballot registrations were in question.

Lehigh County, Pennsylvania announced that they were also investigating hundreds of fake ballot registrations that were turned in recently by a questionable voter registration group. Lancaster, Monroe and York Counties in Pennsylvania have reported similar criminal acts and they are investigating. At least two counties reported that Field+Media Corps was behind the thousands of fraudulent registrations. The ballot registration harvesting group is based in Arizona.

MICHIGAN

The Gateway Pundit reported extensively about the leftist group GBI Strategies, a Democrat-linked group that received funding from Joe Biden and the Democrat Senatorial Campaign, that was caught dumping thousands of fraudulent ballots into the 2020 election in Michigan. GBI Strategies had “canvassers” working in several black-majority cities in Michigan, including Flint, Benton Harbor, Ypsilanti, Inkster, Southfield, Muskegon, Lansing, and Saginaw.

The FBI took over the GBI investigation in where it went to die.

An official with GBI, Brianna Hawkins, admitted to police that the group turned in hundreds of fake registrations and was operating in several states and Washington DC.

Safeguarding Trust In Our Elections

As a Connecticut resident, I value a democracy where every eligible vote counts and every citizen can have full confidence in the results. Fair, secure, and transparent elections are essential to our shared civic life. That is why I am concerned about legislation passed this year in Hartford that expanded no-excuse absentee voting and placed greater emphasis on access than on safeguards.

I appreciate the Republican representatives who voted “no” on these changes. Their position is grounded in facts, recent experiences here in Connecticut, and simple common sense. Weakening existing safeguards does not truly expand voting rights — it risks undermining them by creating new opportunities for fraud and eroding public confidence.

Nationwide, inaccurate voter rolls remain a serious concern. Audits in states such as Virginia, Texas, Georgia, and Michigan have identified non-citizens, deceased individuals, and duplicate registrations still listed as active voters. These are not minor clerical issues; they require consistent maintenance to keep elections clean. Relaxing standards in Connecticut would overlook these important lessons.

Mail-in and absentee ballots carry known vulnerabilities.

House Passes Bill Preventing Credit Card Companies from Tracking Gun Sales

On July 14, 2026, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to block credit card companies from tracking gun and ammunition sales.

The bill, H.R. 1181, passed on a vote of 221 to 201. Two-hundred-and-fifteen Republicans voted for the bill, along with five Democrats and one Independent.

H.R. 1181 is sponsored by Riley Moore (R-WV).

Breitbart News reported Moore’s introduction of the bill on February 12, 2025, noting that he titled it the “Protecting Privacy in Purchases Act.”

He introduced it after major credit card companies succumbed to the gun control lobby during the Biden Administration and made plans to track the sales of guns and ammo.

For example, on September 11, 2022, Breitbart News pointed out Visa caved to pressure from gun control groups and New York Democrats, agreeing to flag gun and ammo purchases via a merchant code. The Associated Press observed that Mastercard and other major credit card companies also agreed to flag gun sales. On March 2, 2023, Breitbart News noted Discover was slated to begin tracking gun and ammunition purchases with the new MCC in April 2023.
