Consumer Protection Laws: Unconstitutional Controls That Hurt the Very People They Claim to Help

From rent caps to “price-gouging” laws, a new wave of so-called consumer-protection laws is sweeping state capitols. These measures are marketed as compassion in a crisis — or “fairness” in housing — but their substance is the same: command-and-control price fixing that violates the Constitution, tramples private-property rights, and sabotages the free market’s ability to allocate goods and services when people need them most.

Three recent bills illustrate the trend. Alabama’s House Bill 528 (HB528) and Virginia’s House Bill 1301 (HB1301) expand anti-gouging controls to more transactions and longer periods after emergencies. New Jersey’s Assembly Bill 3361 (A3361) imposes rent control on manufactured-home sites. Nebraska’s Legislative Bill 266 (LB266), however, is a rare bright spot, preempting local rent control and affirming property rights. Together, these bills spotlight the central question: Will states defend a constitutional, republican system rooted in liberty and voluntary exchange, or drift toward administrative despotism under the banner of “consumer protection”?

Protecting Property and Contract Rights

America’s Founders understood what modern lawmakers too often forget: Price controls are a form of compelled exchange that violates liberty. The U.S. Constitution safeguards that liberty in multiple places:

  • Fifth Amendment: “Nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.” Price ceilings that force owners to sell below market value are regulatory takings in substance, if not in name.
  • Article I, Section 10: “No State shall … pass any … Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts.” When a legislature dictates the permissible price, term, or escalation of a private lease or service, it impairs the parties’ agreed-upon obligations.
  • Ninth and 10th Amendments: The people retain unenumerated rights, and powers not delegated to the federal government are reserved to the states or the people. These clauses limit government; they do not license it to control every transaction.
  • 14th Amendment (due process and equal protection): Arbitrary economic edicts that single out owners for special burdens invite due-process and equal-protection concerns.

Consumer-protection statutes also collide with first principles. The Declaration of Independence identifies unalienable rights — life, liberty, and property — and charges government to secure them. Free exchange is a peaceful exercise of those rights, and upholds one’s pursuit of happiness. Substituting bureaucratic fiat for voluntary exchange undermines the moral basis of self-government.

Nancy Pelosi Sparks Fury After She Debuts a Faux Southern Accent to Mock Christians for Their Faith

Nancy Pelosi may no longer possess the power or mental sharpness she once had, but her bitterness toward conservatives and faithful followers of Christ remains strong.

The former Speaker of the House attended a discussion hosted by the Harvard Kennedy School earlier this week. While being interviewed by journalist Alison King, she discussed her career in politics, her perspective on the political environment, her views on the Democratic Party’s current status, and more.

However, an otherwise uninteresting event turned nasty when Pelosi decided to get overly cruel. She decided to pull a Hillary Clinton and fake a southern accent while mocking faithful Christians for supposed hypocrisy.

How wicked.

PELOSI (faking Southern accent): You’re people of faith!? You go to church on Sunday and pray in church on Sunday and prey on people the rest of the week!?

What is this? (laughing)

One could say Pelosi, who is Catholic, is a terrible representative of Catholicism, considering she has long supported abortion with no limits whatsoever.

Not only that, she wants taxpayers to fund this demonic practice.

Social media users responded to Pelosi’s remarks with anger.

“We Just Won”: Trump Gloats After Bill Gates Admits Climate Change Won’t End World

In the late 1970s, after ‘global cooling’ armageddon science fell out of fashion, a well-oiled machine comprised of billionaire-funded NGOs, the MSM, Hollywood, woke Wall Street, and a robust fact-checking / censorship cartel – started pushing a cult narrative about the planet’s imminent demise in a hellish inferno of global warming. They’ve blamed everything from cow farts and Taylor Swift’s private jet to two-stroke chainsaws, petrol-powered cars, and whatever else these climate Marxists wanted banned – and forced people into authoritarian bullshit like ‘electric stoves only’ and ’15 minute cities’ and ‘eat the bugs,’ etc.

Now, as data centers are coincidentally projected to need record amounts of electricity, Bill Gates has changed his mind about all of that.

And of course the climate cult was one giant grift – or as one former DOGE worker put it, “a heist on the U.S. Treasury” carried out through propaganda that allowed ‘virtuous’ climate bills to be passed easily.

To see this machine in action, look no further than the number of news articles which warned of a “climate crisis” going back 10 years:

And yet, despite decades of gospel over melting ice caps and doom, Gates simply shreds it and decides it’s ackshually not such a big deal.

Study Reveals Taxpayer Funds Meant to End Homelessness Are Being Used to Fund the Radical Left’s Agenda

A new study has exposed waste and abuse in the industry that is meant to ‘end’ homelessness. It revealed that taxpayer dollars that have been earmarked for this problem have been funneled to radical left wing causes for political reasons.

It actually makes perfect sense. There are lots of people who make a ton of money fighting homelessness. Why would they want the problem to be solved? That would mean an end to their industry.

This is a reminder that progressives do not actually care about the homeless. They see them as a means to an end. A way to fund their preferred political causes.

FOX News reports:

A new study just exposed the corruption behind America’s homelessness crisis

A groundbreaking investigation, “Infiltrated” – backed by more than 50 pages of documentation from the Capital Research Center in cooperation with Discovery Institute – pulls back the curtain on a vast system of corruption. It reveals how billions in taxpayer funds intended to lift people out of homelessness have instead bankrolled radical activism and anti-American political agendas, betraying both the taxpayers who fund it and the homeless they were meant to help…

It exposes how radical networks have quietly embedded themselves within leading homelessness nonprofits, sharing infrastructure, donors and ideology.

What began as a movement rooted in compassion has metastasized into what can only be described as a Homelessness Industrial Complex – a sprawling web of nonprofits, bureaucrats and activists feeding off the very crisis they claim to solve.

They’ve built an empire of corruption draped in “evidence-based” slogans that shield politics, protect paychecks and betray the vulnerable.

The report lays it bare: these networks posture as defenders of America’s homeless, yet in truth, they have become their greatest exploiters, dependent on failure to sustain power.

California’s Retirement Fund Lost 71% Of $468M Investment In Clean Energy And Won’t Say How

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) lost roughly 71% of its $468 million investment in a clean-energy and technology private equity fund – and won’t explain how. The losses highlight growing concerns about the pension giant’s private equity strategy, which relies heavily on opaque, illiquid investments and leaves taxpayers ultimately on the hook.

According to state records analyzed by the Center Square, the CalPERS Clean Energy & Technology Fund (CETF), launched in 2007, has seen its value fall from a total commitment of $468.4 million to $138 million as of March 31, 2025. That represents a loss of more than $330 million, even after paying $22 million in fees and costs to private equity managers.

CalPERS’ overall returns for fiscal 2024–2025 were 11.6%, with public equities returning 16.8% and private equity 14.3%. The similar performance between the two asset classes has raised questions about whether the complexity and cost of private equity are worth it.

“If you can get these kinds of returns on the public markets, why bother with all the complexities and the illiquidity involved in private equity?” said Marc Joffe, a public finance expert and visiting fellow at the California Policy Center, in an interview with The Center Square.

Joffe said the CETF losses underscore “the combined dangers of private equity and ESG investment,” describing it as an opaque strategy that appears driven by “green credentials” rather than returns. “CalPERS would be better off focusing on a diverse portfolio of publicly traded equities to get better long-term returns,” he said.

Woman who screamed ‘f–k these cops’ after purposely mowing down NYPD officer handed light sentence

A woman who screamed “F–k these cops” after purposely running down a police officer and breaking his leg with her car got “not nearly enough” time in prison at her sentencing Wednesday, a cop union said.

Sahara Dula, 25, was sentenced two years behind bars after she admitted to intentionally plowed over an NYPD cop while driving high into oncoming traffic on the Upper East Side in January 2024.

“The sentence is not nearly enough. This individual tried to run down a New York City police officer. She could have killed him,” railed Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry.

“We’re glad she is going behind bars instead of walking free, but our justice system needs to send a message that there will be zero leniency for attacks on police officers.”

Dula, who infamously admitted to mowing into police “on purpose,” appeared for sentencing before Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Melissa T. Lewis, after she pleaded guilty to assault in the second degree on June 16.

Blood Pressure Medication Recalled Due to Possible Carcinogens

More than 580,000 bottles of blood pressure medication are being recalled across the United States due to possible carcinogenic substances, according to a notice from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recall involves three separate lots of prazosin hydrochloride, a type of alpha-blocking medication, that were distributed by New Jersey-based Teva Pharmaceuticals, because a test result for N-nitroso Prazosin impurity C found that the substance’s levels are above the “acceptable intake limit” under a type of test for carcinogens.

The recall encompasses three dosages for prazosin hydrochloride capsules, according to the notice. They include 181,659 bottles of 1-milligram doses of the drug, 291,512 bottles of 2-milligram doses, and 107,673 bottles of 5-milligram doses.

It means that the medication contained higher than acceptable levels of nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic compounds that can increase the risk of cancer when taken at high doses over long periods.

The FDA classified the recall on Oct. 24 as Class II, which the agency says is a scenario where a product, drug, or food “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences” or it includes “an outcome where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

The medication bottles were distributed nationwide, it said. The recall, which was initiated voluntarily by Teva Pharmaceuticals, started on Oct. 7.

Food Lines Are Already Growing Longer All Over America

It is already happening.  There has been a lot of talk that there will be a surge in demand at America’s overwhelmed food banks once funding for the food stamp program ends in early November, but the truth is that we are already witnessing a surge in demand.  So what is going to happen if the current government shutdown persists for an extended period of time?  On one recent evening, the line at a food bank in downtown Kansas City “snaked through the parking lot, down a driveway and into the street”…

On a recent Thursday evening, the line of cars waiting to pick up food at Redemptorist Social Services Center in midtown snaked through the parking lot, down a driveway and into the street.

Demand for free food is soaring across Kansas City, as job cuts increase, food inflation remains persistently high and federal food assistance is slashed by the Trump administration.

Julie McCaw, executive director at Redemptorist, called the situation “alarming.” Families with working parents, senior citizens and people who simply cannot find work increasingly are turning to food pantries like hers for help.

Sadly, this is just the beginning.

“Petrified” Woman Details Brutal Reality Of Lawless, Borderless Britain

A clip of a TalkTV caller from London has gone viral after she expressed her extreme distress over rising violence in her area, particularly stabbings, in the wake of yet another horrific incident Tuesday.

As we earlier highlighted, an innocent man walking his dog in West London was brutally stabbed to death for no reason whatsoever by an illegal Afghan migrant, with two others being seriously injured by the knife wielding maniac.

It was quickly ascertained that the suspect arrived into the country completely illegally on the back of a lorry, yet was granted leave to remain in 2022.

The caller, a woman named Sarah, was explained that she lives near Hillingdon, the area where the attack yesterday was carried out.

She noted that since moving into her house in 2019, her local shop has experienced three stabbings and one murder.

“My friend was murdered last year up on The High Street. A girl that I know was murdered in South Ball Park. Government are failing us. We’re scared for our children,” the caller urged.

“I have a 22-year old son and I’m begging him to move out of this country,” she continued, adding “What are these politicians doing to us? They’re putting our children in so much danger. They put everyone in danger and they’re doing nothing to help us.”

US to withdraw some troops from NATO’s eastern flank, Romania says

The United States plans to cut the number of troops present on Europe’s eastern flank, including soldiers who were to be stationed at Romania’s Mihail Kogalniceanu air base, Romania’s defence ministry said on Wednesday.

The ministry said the decision was expected given changes in Washington’s priorities, and that roughly 1,000 U.S. troops would continue to be stationed in Romania. Between 1,000 and 1,200 U.S. troops rotated out a month ago and will not be replaced, it said in a statement.

Washington’s European allies have been told previously by the administration of President Donald Trump that they will need to take more responsibility for their own security as the United States focuses more on its own borders and on the Indo-Pacific region.

“The American decision is to stop the rotation in Europe of a brigade that had elements in several NATO countries,” the defence ministry said.
