Growing mystery of suspected energy attacks draws US concern

The Biden administration is facing new pressure to resolve a mystery that has vexed its predecessors: Is an adversary using a microwave or radio wave weapon to attack the brains of U.S. diplomats, spies and military personnel?

The number of reported cases of possible attack is sharply growing and lawmakers from both parties, as well as those believed to be affected, are demanding answers. But scientists and government officials aren’t yet certain about who might have been behind any attacks, if the symptoms could have been caused inadvertently by surveillance equipment — or if the incidents were actually attacks.

Whatever an official review concludes could have enormous consequences. Confirmation that a U.S. adversary has been conducting damaging attacks against U.S. personnel would unleash calls for a forceful response by the United States.

For now, the administration is providing assurances that it takes the matter seriously, is investigating aggressively and will make sure those affected have good medical care.

The problem has been labeled the “Havana Syndrome,” because the first cases affected personnel in 2016 at the U.S. Embassy in Cuba. At least 130 cases across the government are now under investigation, up from several dozen last year, according to a U.S. defense official who was not authorized to discuss details publicly. The National Security Council is leading the investigation.

People who are believed to have been affected have reported headaches, dizziness and symptoms consistent with concussions, with some requiring months of medical treatment. Some have reported hearing a loud noise before the sudden onset of symptoms.

Particularly alarming are revelations of at least two possible incidents in the Washington area, including one case near the White House in November in which an official reported dizziness.

The new higher number of possible cases was first reported by The New York Times. CNN first reported the case near the White House and an additional incident in November.

Advocates for those affected accuse the U.S. government of long failing to take the problem seriously or provide the necessary medical care and benefits.

“The government has a much better understanding of it than it has let on,” said Mark Zaid, a Washington lawyer who represents several people affected. Zaid has obtained National Security Agency documents noting it has information dating to the late 1990s about an unidentified “hostile country” possibly having a microwave weapon “to weaken, intimidate, or kill an enemy over time.”

Chris Miller, the acting defense secretary during the last months of the Trump administration, created a Pentagon team to investigate the suspected attacks. That was after he met a soldier late last year who described how, while serving in a country Miller wouldn’t identify, he had heard a “shrieking” sound and then had a splitting headache.

“He was well-trained, extremely well-trained, and he’d been in combat before,” Miller told The Associated Press. “This is an American, a member of the Department of Defense. At that point, you can’t ignore that.”

Defense and intelligence officials have publicly promised to push for answers and better care for people with symptoms. Lt. Col. Thomas Campbell, a Defense Department spokesman, said the causes of any incidents “are areas of active inquiry.” Officials have not identified a suspected country, though some people affected suspect Russian involvement.

CIA Director William Burns testified before Congress that he would make the investigation “a very high priority to ensure that my colleagues get the care that they deserve and that we get to the bottom of what caused these incidents and who was responsible.”

Burns receives daily updates on the investigation, which covers employees who have reported cases this year. He has met with those reporting injuries as have other top CIA officials. The agency has worked to reduce the wait time for its employees to receive outpatient treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

The CIA also replaced its chief medical officer with a doctor seen internally as more sympathetic to possible cases.

“We were treated so awfully in the past,” said Marc Polymeropoulos, a 26-year CIA veteran who was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury following a 2017 visit to Russia. “Now they’re putting people in place who not only believe us but are going to advocate for our health care.”

One key analysis identified “directed, pulsed radio frequency energy” as the most plausible culprit. Published in December by the National Academy of Sciences, the report said a radio frequency attack could alter brain function without causing “gross structural damage.” But the panel could not make a definitive finding on how U.S. personnel may have been hit.

And a declassified 2018 State Department report cited “a lack of senior leadership, ineffective communications, and systemic disorganization” in responding to the Havana cases. The report says the cause of the injuries was “currently unknown.” The document was published by George Washington University’s National Security Archive.

The report also noted that the CIA ultimately closed its Havana station, a victory for a potential adversary.

130 U.S. Officials Attacked By Suspected ‘Directed Energy Microwave Weapon,’ Suffer Severe Brain Injuries: Reports

Scores of top U.S. officials have been attacked by what officials believe is a “directed energy microwave weapon” that can leave victims with permanent debilitating neurological symptoms.

“Well U.S. officials say there are now 130 suspected victims, mostly CIA operatives and U.S. diplomats being treated for brain injuries, debilitating headaches, and vertigo,” Fox News reporter Jennifer Griffin reported on Thursday. “The targets they believe of a directed energy microwave weapon. Fox has confirmed two individuals working on the NSC during the Trump administration believe they were targeted in 2019 and in 2020 in the days following the election. One was near the White House and one was walking her dog. The Russians have been working on mobile microwave weapons for years.”

Griffin reported earlier in the week that indications suggest the attacks could potentially go back all the way to 1996, but they first gained serious attention in 2016 in Cuba when numerous U.S. personnel described experiencing the symptoms.

White House Acknowledges Mysterious Health Attacks Dubbed ‘Havana Syndrome’ Have Occurred On U.S. Soil

The White House on Friday revealed that radio frequency attacks against U.S. personnel — like that kind that were suspected to have occurred in Cuba and elsewhere around the world — have also happened in the U.S.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said possible incidents occurred in the United States that appear similar to other attacks that caused mysterious illnesses. One reportedly occurred near the White House.

“At this point, at this moment, we don’t know the cause of these incidents, which are both limited in nature and the vast majority of which have been reported overseas,” Psaki said in answer to questions. One of the incidents happened last year near the White House Ellipse, sickening a national security council staffer. In another, a White House official reported feeling symptoms while walking her dog in Arlington, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C, the Daily Mail reported.

In the past few years, there have been several incidents affecting U.S. embassy personnel, including two that made diplomats in Cuba sick — prompting the nickname “Havana syndrome.” “Dozens of Americans have been diagnosed with a range of symptoms, including traumatic brain injuries, with several describing bizarre experiences like strange noises and sensations. The U.S. government has acknowledged cases in Cuba, China, Uzbekistan and Russia — but there are media reports of other countries now, too,” ABC News reported.

U.S. Investigates 2 Possible Directed Energy Attacks Near White House; Victims Experienced Debilitating Symptoms

It has been determined that American Embassy workers and their family members were likely injured by exposure to microwave energy while stationed in China and Cuba (see 1, 2, 3).

Now the U.S. government is investigating two possible microwave energy attacks that occurred here.

According to CNN Reports “Federal agencies are investigating at least two possible incidents on US soil, including one near the White House in November of last year, that appear similar to mysterious, invisible attacks that have led to debilitating symptoms for dozens of US personnel abroad.”

Defense officials briefed lawmakers on the Senate and House Armed Services Committees on the  incident near the White House. earlier this month. That incident  occurred near the Ellipse, the large oval lawn on the south side of the White House and “sickened one National Security Council official”  according to CNN.

In 2009 the White House official reported a similar attack while walking her dog in a Virginia suburb just outside Washington, according to a GQ report.

According to Politico the Pentagon opened an investigation last year regarding “suspected directed-energy attacks occurred on an unknown number of troops” and “directed-energy attacks on U.S. spies and diplomats are well-documented; the CIA recently set up its own task force to look into the issue.”

“A directed-energy attack uses highly concentrated electromagnetic energy, including high-powered radio frequency or microwave devices and particle beams, to harm a target. The attacks can take different forms, from jamming electronic equipment to causing pain or permanent injuries. A report commissioned by the State Department and released in December pointed to “directed, pulsed radiofrequency energy” as the most probable cause for the “Havana syndrome” incidents.”

US Investigating ‘Havana Syndrome’ Directed Energy Attack Near White House

Since 2017 controversy and speculation has abounded over the legitimacy of the so-called “Havana syndrome” story, which involved some 50 diplomatic officials working at the US Embassy in Cuba coming down with strange illnesses and symptoms – from headaches to vomiting to ‘brain trauma’ – which was blamed on high tech covert ‘sonic attacks’ by nefarious actors. Officials were quick to blame either Russian intelligence or Cuban operatives in what sounded like a wild James Bond style bit of futuristic espionage. 

Last week the allegations returned to national media spotlight after defense officials said they believe Russia is likely behind “directed energy” attacks on US troops in northeast Syria. Apparently some US troops occupying the country began reporting “flu-like symptoms” which caused the DoD to investigate possible linkage to microwave or directed energy weapons on the battlefield of Syria. Politico reported that “officials identified Russia as a likely culprit, according to two people with direct knowledge of the matter.”

And now CNN is reporting what is perhaps the most bizarre and outlandish instance of this yet – a ‘sonic attack’ which sickened a top administration official while standing just outside White House grounds.

“That incident, which occurred near the Ellipse, the large oval lawn on the south side of the White House, sickened one National Security Council official, according to multiple current and former US officials and sources familiar with the matter,” CNN writes. 

The report says the symptoms experienced by the unidentified official were consistent to those reported in Havana at the embassy years ago. The original Havana Syndrome incident involved personnel saying they experienced everything from vomiting to concussions to extreme nausea to chronic headaches and even minor brain injuries. However, analysts and scientists have remained deeply divided on the issue, with speculation ranging from high pitched sounds from crickets or even mass hysteria causing the illness.

At the same time the US-funded National Academy of Sciences concluded that “microwave radiation” was most likely the source of the strange illnesses in Havana. Should this be the case, what makes it hugely alarming for US national security is that it’s invisible, soundless, and thus undetectable.

Scientists suggest US embassies were hit with high-power microwaves – here’s how the weapons work

The mystery ailment that has afflicted U.S. embassy staff and CIA officers off and on over the last four years in Cuba, China, Russia and other countries appears to have been caused by high-power microwaves, according to a report released by the National Academies. A committee of 19 experts in medicine and other fields concluded that directed, pulsed radiofrequency energy is the “most plausible mechanism” to explain the illness, dubbed Havana syndrome.

The report doesn’t clear up who targeted the embassies or why they were targeted. But the technology behind the suspected weapons is well understood and dates back to the Cold War arms race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. High-power microwave weapons are generally designed to disable electronic equipment. But as the Havana syndrome reports show, these pulses of energy can harm people, as well.

American Embassy Workers Definitely Harmed by Microwave Energy Says National Academies of Sciences

Reports about American Embassy workers being targeted by microwave weapons serves as a great reminder that “Microwave Sickness” has been recognized as a medical illness for several decades (see 1, 2, 3, 4). In fact, last year, the World Health Organization warned that high levels of Electromagnetic Fields (aka “Electrosmog”) could cause health issues in a significant percentage of the population.

Exposure to microwave radiation from common wireless sources like cell towers, utility “Smart” Meters, Bluetooth, Activity Trackers, cell phones, Wi-Fi routers, wireless chargers, etc. can cause illness and injury too.

Slowly but surely more research has determined that American Embassy workers were harmed by microwave energy. Only time will tell if this will make a difference for other Americans already being exposed to dangerous levels of involuntary radiation as well as ongoing U.S. participation in the highly opposed “Race for 5G” (see 1, 2).

China uses microwave weapons to blast Indian troops in disputed border region

China got round a no-live-shots agreement during a border stand-off in the Himalayas by deploying microwave weapons to “cook” enemy troops from India, a Beijing-based academic has claimed.

The Chinese military used “high-energy electromagnetic radiation” technology to effectively turn “two strategic hilltops that had been occupied by Indian soldiers into a microwave oven”, The Times reports.

The attack left the Indian troops “vomiting” and unable to stand within 15 minutes, enabling the People’s Liberation Army to “retake two strategically important hilltops in the Himalayas without any exchange of live fire”, according to Jin Canrong, a professor of international relations at China’s Renmin University.

The academic told attendees at a recent lecture that China didn’t publicise the victory, in late August, “because we solved the problem beautifully”.
