Yellowstone National Park’s oldest wolf pack left the protected boundaries of the park this winter, inadvertently wandering into a state that allows hunting. Wolf advocates are afraid the pack, known as Mollie’s Pack, will be targeted when hunting in Wyoming begins Sept. 15. These aren’t just any old wolves — they’re the descendents of the original wolves reintroduced into Yellowstone 31 years ago.
In an effort to protect the wolves, a social media influencer and dog trainer from Austin, Texas, has made a threat to dox, or share personal information online, those who harm the famous wolves. In late July, Jonas Black posted a $10,000 reward for information on anyone who hunts Mollie’s Pack when the season opens next month.
“This isn’t fair chase,” he wrote on Facebook. “These wolves are conditioned to people. They don’t run. It’s not a hunt. It’s execution dressed up as sport.”
It’s legal to hunt wolves in all the states surrounding Yellowstone, including Wyoming. Much of the attention on wolves leaving Yellowstone centers on the park’s border with Montana, where 19 wolves who typically reside in the park were killed in 2022. That year was particularly deadly for Yellowstone wolves, who lost 20% of their population.
